Don’t use liquid fabric softener as this can make your fabrics flammable

Who doesn’t like the smell of freshly washed laundry with a hint of lavender or some other delicate scent? Fabric softener is great for adding a nice scent to our clothes after a wash. It also helps to make your clothes easier to iron. However, it can cause fabric to be more flammable. Studies have shown that fabrics tend to burn faster and more severely when fabric softener is used. Distilled vinegar is a great substitute for fabric softener. It will not only ensure your laundry smells fresh but will also help to kill germs and clean your washer. Vinegar is also eco-friendly.

You can use citric acid powder and Oxy-Clean to clean your machine

Give your machine a clean every so often using citric acid powder or Oxy-clean. This is an effective way to remove soap scum, bad odors and lime scale that builds up inside the washer. Mix one cup of citric acid with the same quantity of baking soda and place the mixture in the soap drawer. Run a wash cycle with the highest temperature set at 90 degrees. You can do the same with Oxy-clean. Simply replace the citric acid mixture with Oxy-clean.

For ‘front load’ washers, after use, keep the door open and the detergent container open to dry out and do not allow mold to build up

Mold and bacteria love warm and moist places. A closed washing machine offers the perfect environment for mold and bacteria growth. Front load machines are particularly vulnerable to mold growth within the rubber gaskets and the soap drawer. You can avoid this by simply leaving your machine’s door open after a wash.
